Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein

Yea I have been a little lazy on updating the blog, sorry...

Vast Aire and Vordul Mega's 2001 futuristic masterpiece. Odd that an album that is over a decade old is more progressive than anything coming out now. This album put El-P's production on the map, and is possibly still his best work. Spaced out beats, abstract witty rhymes; The Cold Vein is a very one-of-a-kind project, which many have tried to imitate, but no one has come close to. Clever, gritty, hard-hitting; Cannibal Ox make you want to bob your head, light one up, harlem shake, and punch holes in the wall all at the same time. Even how they explain their name is dope: "Emcees who eat their own kind, with words that cut like razorblades = Cannibal Ox." The Cold Vein might be hard for some to grasp and get into, and those people should fuck off and listen to Nicki Minaj. Seriously though, just let the beat for "Raspberry Fields" kick in and tell me that you don't get that "I love hip hop" feeling. The combination of Vast's slow, thoughtful wordplay, Vordul's slick-talking quick flow, and El-P's "space oddessy through Brooklyn" beats are unmatched. My favorite tracks are: Stress Rap, Atom, and Iron Galaxy, but it is all good, I could listen to this album 80 times straight.

1. Iron Galaxy
2. Ox Out The Cage

Cool Calm Pete - Lost

Cool Calm Pete couldn't have picked a better alias for himself. Chilled out beats and slow-paced witty rhymes, Pete is relaxed and in no hurry. I would call his style lazy if he wasn't so fucking clever. A former member of New York underground hip hop collective "Babbletron", this is his Def Jux debut and first solo album. Not exactly the greatest fit for Def Jux in my opinion, but it was definately a good call for them just getting his music out there. Got me thinking, "Damn we need more Korean emcees out there.....". He refers to the Iraq war as "reruns of Viet Nam", what's not to love? My favorite tracks: The List, Tune In, and Two A.M. So get "Lost" then get lost.

Immortal Technique "Dance with the Devil" video.

This isn't the official video, but for once is better than the official video is.  Someone animated the fucked up story that "Dance with the Devil" is about, and did a damn good job.  If you haven't heard this song and obviously have been living under a dead man's dick for the last ten years you really need to watch this; if you have heard this song, you still need to watch this.  Either way, beware, this isn't for the faint-hearted.

C-Rayz Walz - Ravipops (The Substance)

C-Rayz Walz is one of the greatest emcees ever.  As El-P puts it: "The dude just oozes hip-hop out his skin."  He has a pretty extensive, and incredibly consistently dope catalogue of albums.  This one is probably my favorite though.  Named after his son, Ravi, (get it Ravipops?) this was his first official Definitive Jux release.  This album has it all, braggadocio tracks, heartfelt dedication tracks, and some just messing around having fun tracks; every song soaked in his entertaining personality.  I originally saw the "Buck 80" video on a Def Jux compilation dvd and had to seek out more of this dude.  I have heard rumors that C-Rayz has been banned from competing in nearly every emcee battle league in New York, and not because he causes problems or has a bad attitude, but because noone can compete with him.  He is like 1,000-0 on the battle scene.  Listen to "Battle Me" and you will find out why.  But unlike the majority of successful battle rappers, he translates into an amazing artist as well, even if he is criminally overlooked.  My favorite tracks are: Guns and Butter, We Live, and Protect My Family; although there is not a single track that I don't like on this album, and how often can you say that anymore?  Not to mention that "The Lineup" may be the greatest posse cut ever.  Now we just need him and Immortal Technique to do another Stronghold album with the rest of their old crew.......and I will leave you with this little piece of advice from the album: "Go back upstairs, eat ya mac cheese and fishsticks/ You ain't 50, you gon' die trying to get rich."

Super Chron Flight Brothers - Emergency Powers: The World Tour

Yes another Backwoodz Studioz release.  Did you download The Reavers LP yet?  No?  Go sit in the corner and put your head down.  If you did check out Terror Firma, then you should have an idea who Billy Woods and Priviledge are.  They came together to form the Super Chron Flight Brothers, a group worth checking out based on their name alone.  But they aren't a Cypress Hill cover band as the name might suggest, they are actually two really educated artists that simply like to indulge in a bit of that sweet ganja now and again.  The chronic is a reoccuring theme throughout the LP, but it is also largely saturated with insightful social commentary.  Topics touched on include things like immigration, landlord injustices, government corruption, and of course the flaws of the legal/judicial system.  It is another one of my favorites, but it didn't get the greatest reviews, I am guessing because critics were expecting a "Hits From the Bong Pt. 3", and got more of a "Zeitgeist The Movie: the Hip-Hop Version".  None the less, dope shit.  I was hooked from the first time I heard the MF DOOM produced, "Dirtweed", that begins with the a snippet of the notorious courtroom scene in the movie Blow. ("If you think about it, what did I really do? I crossed an imaginary line with a bunch of plants....")  My favorite tracks are: the aforementioned Dirtweed, Public Defenders, and High Grade; a lot of other gems on this one though.  So you supply the super chron, and I will hook up the Flight Brothers......yup.

02. European Safari

The Reavers - Terror Firma

I'm going to start you off with one of my absolute favorites.  The term "super-group" is thrown around a lot in the hip hop world nowadays, but this one actually is pretty fuckin super.  I was only familiar with a few emcees at first, but after I listened to this project I found myself searching for the back catalogues of all the members, and religiously checking the Backwoodz Studioz website.  Politically charged, intelligent, and ganster as fuck all at the same time.  The inside cover has a map of all the areas in the world where landmines were placed during wartime and never removed.  Unique emcees, unique beats, and a one of a kind project.  My favorite tracks are: Slums, Shadows, and Pirate; the whole album bangs though.  Download this, light one up, and enjoy.  Your neck will break off, and hell you might even learn a thing or two....
